You are partially ... By: pingskills. on 29 Mar 12, 10:02:42 You are partially correct. The main reason however is that? when the backspin hits your rubber it will drag downwards. This means if you don't lift the ball up it will go into the net.
hi, just wanted to ... By: liluoke. on 28 Mar 12, 00:58:18 hi, just wanted to make sure; the reason why you have to hit more vertical (to lift the ball more, essentially),? is because when they backspin and you return it, when the previously backspinning ball is now going back towards their side, the ball REVERSES its spin, causing any stroke you make to have some TOP spin. top spin = quicker descent into the table so if you don't adjust by hitting your topspin HIGHER as in this video, you will hit the net - is this correct?

One question: do you focus mentally on your wrist just prior to impact, moving upwards to? create extra speed as you hit the ball, or your wrist doesn't more much, its more just the 'start low, finish high with 90-90 angles' thats important?

By: Gzusvictory. on 25 May 12, 02:36:36 Another thing to add on for those like playing mind game can include the person who receives the smash to leave a wider area to their dominant side. This can have a strong influence on the opponent to think, "Oh, they left more there, so I will smash it there." Then right when they hit the ball, the receiving player can more easily predict where they will smash and can counter hit? or counter loop the ball to get into the offensive side of the rally.

I agree with ... By: BIGBEART8. on 23 May 12, 16:32:21 I agree with everything except? for one thing that I think some players would prefer. You don't have to be in the dead center of the possible angles. I think it is better to have your body in a position so that your forehand has more of the wide angles, simply because your backhand can't possibly cover like your forehand. It just doesn't have the dexterity to do it.

If your feet is ... By: gimplar. on 14 May 12, 14:48:42 If your feet is lined up with your shoulders then you will tend to play a more passive game. If your feet are lined up together then you tend to have a game that favors backhands.
A wider foot spread allows you to quickly move and also to attack lower balls.
A left foot slightly in front of the right? foot means you want to play a very strong forehand game (you will be a player who tends to step around and using a forehand shot from the BH side).
If you're right ... By: gimplar. on 14 May 12, 14:46:52 If you're right handed then yes, having your left foot slightly in front of your right foot is standard. It shouldn't be MUCH more forward. Maybe the heel of your left foot is aligned with the middle of your left foot's arch.
This helps a little with forward/backward balance but it also is a position that favors a strong FH attack (which is what most? players want). This position allows you to get maximum power from hip/shoulder rotation when doing a FH.

rally hate to ... By: iandemagi. on 03 May 12, 19:35:39 rally hate to disagree with you-but you guys are not choppers:
1) If the smash? is a high ball even a chopper will lob it unless it is to the long pips backhand.
2) get back far enough to let the ball drop (if possible) then execute your stroke-if you chop a high ball high it sits up waaay too much!
3) The stroke depends how much topspin you are taking off-a very lightly spun flat hit if chopped how you show will go into the bottom of the net or sail off the end line.
just my opinion...sorry
If you want to ... By: gimplar. on 03 May 12, 18:47:53 If you want to train someone's top spin then close to the table blocking is the way to go. If you want to make it more challenging then you can chop block, side spin block or flick your wrist a little to generate some of your own top spin.
This sort of excercise is more? targeted to loopers who want to practice against choppers..and then most people who use this style have long pips on the backhand.
That sort of training is very advanced though.

That style obviously works really well for Wang Zeng Yi but if I was advising some one starting out I would say that it is too many techniques to master. The majority of the best players in the world play an attacking style and use normal rubber and have either a normal shakehand or penhold grip. There are always exceptions though!

Then I found out that? it was all about the wrist motion. I simply wasn't bending my wrist enough, thus I had incorrect starting positon and to solve this I had to change my grip to be able to generate enough spin. A friend of mine suggested that I bend my wrist more towards the body and voila, it worked!

Hi Jeff and Alois
When i see Ma Lin serve i donīt see the ball. Can you make a video on how to hide the ball like Ma Lin?
No I meant that ... By: pingskills. on 03 Apr 12, 01:24:11 No I meant that when people hide their serves it makes it harder to return the ball. When that happens the rallies are shorter and people can find that boring. If you can't hide the serve, it's easier for the receiver to return and hopefully the rallies are longer which? makes the game more interesting to watch.

Aren't you allowed ... By: gravedigger02. on 29 Mar 12, 21:41:52 Aren't you allowed to tell the umpire that you can't see how the opponent makes contact with the ball? If there is no umpire, you? are definately allowed to tell your opponent. One day I had an opponent who tossed the ball into his racket and hid his serve. It was the most illegal serve I've ever seen, but he just failed to see his mistake and got very aggressive. After my third protest I got us an umpire and won the match. Illegal serves are a lack of sportsmanship for me. It's like cheating.

That is a popular ... By: pingskills. on 27 Feb 12, 11:27:06 That is a popular opinion but I'm not sure that the Chinese were the reason for this rule change. At the time there were a lot of good Europeans with great serves as well. Waldner made the? final of the 2000 Olympics and had one of the best serves going.
As you say though, the rule needs to be revisited.
this 'do not hide ... By: ms21945. on 26 Feb 12, 16:50:11 this 'do not hide serve' was stupid and shouldn't have been taken in the first place. Of course we all know why its passed - just to eliminate advantages of chinese player who liked to do that more than others. however like the video explained, it's? impossible to monitor the rule 100%, so why bother following the rule?

as always, ... By: dfunkt. on 24 Feb 12, 17:24:37 as always, excellent? stuff! you mention hiding-the-serve being contentious...sadly, i have found that all the rules around serving are all too contentious. at my club i often see and play against players who: 1) don't toss the ball high enough (i am willing to round up 4 inch toss, but ffs, not 1 inch toss!) 2) hit the ball in front of endline 3) toss starts beneath table, or from closed fist 4) obscure the toss or contact with arm. however, when i usually call people on it they get all huffy.

I have that ... By: Aristarkhos31. on 18 Feb 12, 11:36:07 I have that weakness too. Not perfected my response to this yet but here goes,
If opponent makes u use backhand w/ a backspin...
1) assuming, there is enough time, you quickly move to forehand position (im picturing you opening the entire right hand side of the table) and move back into position before your? opponent takes advantage of the open corner.
2) Simply work on your angled, backhand downward slice to cut the spin and add more backspin to the ball.

Hmmm... this is ... By: Aristarkhos31. on 18 Feb 12, 11:24:38 Hmmm... this is more of a front-foot (& forehand) response to a backspin shot. I will keep this in mind as I don't always try this -- more often than not the ball drops down.
Alternatively, I can also drop the ball even more if slice downwards, right? Forehand here, is more difficult for me because? of the strain on the wrist. With a backhand-downward slice I can either drop the ball near the net or skim over to the opponent's far side corners/edges.

Thanks for the tips. I'd have to agree with you. We filmed these video a long time? ago and are trying to improve our production quality all the time. If you take a look at our latest videos I hope you'll notice a big difference. As a matter of fact we are now in the process of re-filming these older lessons.
By: cooljunkproductions. on 03 May 12, 02:06:18
just a tip to increase the production quality, don't use a blue background or any text animation effects from windows movie maker.? use a black background with white text, and I would stick to dissolve transitions, or just fast cuts

It's? learning skills, not the latest 3d flick, it's not going to be riveting. We are learning important skills. Thanks pingskills!

Thanks for your feedback. We are? going to re-film these in HD so we'll try and make them less boring.
By: sung yan wong. on 07 Apr 12, 02:41:58
Its boring.?
By: pingskills. on 29 Mar 12, 10:02:42
You are partially correct. The main reason however is that? when the backspin hits your rubber it will drag downwards. This means if you don't lift the ball up it will go into the net.
By: liluoke. on 28 Mar 12, 00:58:18
hi, just wanted to make sure; the reason why you have to hit more vertical (to lift the ball more, essentially),? is because when they backspin and you return it, when the previously backspinning ball is now going back towards their side, the ball REVERSES its spin, causing any stroke you make to have some TOP spin. top spin = quicker descent into the table so if you don't adjust by hitting your topspin HIGHER as in this video, you will hit the net - is this correct?
By: pingskills. on 13 Mar 12, 09:25:28
The most important things to focus on are the start and? finish positions. Once you've got that mastered you could start to think a little bit more about the wrist.
By: FortuneCat1982. on 12 Mar 12, 01:21:03
Hi, thankyou for this video. I really want to work on this skill. One question: do you focus mentally on your wrist just prior to impact, moving upwards to? create extra speed as you hit the ball, or your wrist doesn't more much, its more just the 'start low, finish high with 90-90 angles' thats important? Thankyou for your time!

thank you sooo much my friend at school purs so much backspin on the bal and it always ends up hitting the net so now i know what? to do
By: pingskills. on 13 Feb 12, 10:42:23
Thanks for the kind words. Against a player that keeps playing forehand topspins you can use the block to counter their shots. We have a lesson on this on our website. However the best advice is to stop them using their forehand? in the first place. You can do this by serving the ball short and playing into their backhand. As there's not a lot of room here for comments, you should try out the Ask the Coach section of our website as we love talking about Table Tennis!

Thanks guys, everytime i play Ping Pong at school, i start watching? your videos. By far the tips i can find, it immensly improved my game. :) I do have one question, if you are so kind to answer: what is the best technique to counter a heavy forehand hitter?
By: pingskills. on 27 Jan 12, 05:56:34
No not really tense. Some people prefer a bigger motion but I find this way I get more? control. Often people refer to the loop performed this way as the European loop and the Chinese loop as a much bigger action with the arm.
By: kizaman. on 26 Jan 12, 06:15:58
Your whole arm is locked. It just seems? so tense.

Thanx For the info .. we usualy play the game? bcz of lot of players in our comunity and 1 table availabe :D
By: pingskills. on 20 Dec 11, 12:01:42
This can be difficult. To counter this you? need to improve your footwork. You could practice some drills where you get your practice partner to return wide to your forehand.
By: ismii12. on 19 Dec 11, 21:26:31
then? if my oponent giv return to wide forhand side its hard for me to reach there
By: pingskills. on 19 Dec 11, 10:55:57
If you want to play a forehand then you need to use your footwork to pivot around to the backhand side. Take a look at our lessons on basic footwork as this will show you the movement to use to get around. Once you are in position you can play your forehand as you normally would.?
