Rorty of course is also right, but only if Plato is sophist-icated, which many analysts seem to do without apology. Take the Allegory of the Cave (Republic), in which the protagonist is described as finally emerging from the cave and to recognize the sun itself (i.e., the form of the good). Plato was also clearly interested in living a "just life," of course, but that's neither here nor? there. The point is that Plato believed that it was possible to grasp truth in a final, definitive sense, something which pragmatists deny.

Dialectics, mediatised through langage which is an imitation of being is ultimatly confined to be used negatively - it cant end. And what is this bullshit he is talking about Plato. The burden isn't on ... By: wilthiswork. on 25 Mar 10, 14:56:48 The burden isn't on me to say why modern science wouldn't have emerged w/o the enlightenment. I acknowledge that it's possible, at least. But, the enlightenment *did* lead to modern science, and in a way more interesting than simply having the past lead to the present. So in order to counter, I don't have to say it was logically necessary to have happened that way, all I have to do is show that it was a part of a wider human phenomena, not merely something induced by? a few weird philosophers.

The past did lead ... By: bahramf. on 24 Mar 10, 02:16:04 The past did lead to the present, but that doesn't mean that? w/o the enlightenment we would not have modern science.
I don't need to ... By: wilthiswork. on 23 Mar 10, 23:23:11 I don't need to make Kant's argument; I only need to make the one I'm making, which is that the epistemological impulse was a result of the Enlightenment, and this impulse lead to modern science. The religious? impulse, well, I think there's a tendency in humans to wonder whether life has ultimate meaning, what, if anything will happen over death, etc.

So, do you think ... By: bahramf. on 22 Mar 10, 22:15:00 So, do you think there are certain question which reason burdens human cognition with, which it cannot dismiss but which also "transcend every capacity of human reason" so it cannot answer them either (Critique of Pure Reason).
Because I deny that such questions are weighing on the minds of all human cognizers. Plain? and simple.
Who is in this ... By: bahramf. on 22 Mar 10, 22:10:58 Who is in this alternative society??
I know the space to ... By: wilthiswork. on 22 Mar 10, 20:20:26 I know the space to write here is limited, so I'm going to assume that the stark choice you give me is a result of not having much space to write... Surely there are more choices than a society where religion is indispensable on the one hand, and a society full of? ironists, on the other.
Showing that ... By: wilthiswork. on 22 Mar 10, 20:17:46 Showing that science doesn't *need* a priori principles does not show that foundationalism? was not a key step along the way to modern science. The quest to deal with uncertainty is an urge that is like unto the quest to understand the world around us. I never said dealing with uncertainty was necessary, I said it was not artificially induced by the words of philosophers.
That hasn't ... By: bahramf. on 22 Mar 10, 19:59:16 That hasn't resulted in modern science. Modern science is empirical. It does not - contrary to Kant - need a priori principles to ground the empirical principles (nor are there any such a priori principles) but people like Hume will tell you that all which is empirical is necessarily uncertain (see, the problem of induction).
So, how do scientists get out of bed in the morning and never mind trust? the results of their empirical research? They don't see uncertainty as a big problem.
So, would you like ... By: bahramf. on 22 Mar 10, 19:56:31 So, would you like humanity or any particular society to remain? or regress back into a state of collective consciousness where religion is necessary or would you like society to progress beyond such a state and just become content with contingency, uncertainty, and irony - thus becoming ironists.
Additionally, ... By: wilthiswork. on 22 Mar 10, 16:14:25 Additionally, epistemological uncertainty seems to follow naturally from the attempt to build a system of belief based on what's warranted rather than merely what some political authority tells you. This process has resulted in modern science, which seems? like a pretty good thing. It's not just for old men in arm chairs puffing on pipes, in other words.
That uncertainty is ... By: wilthiswork. on 22 Mar 10, 16:10:00 That uncertainty is sometimes induced for a thrill does not mean that uncertainty as a general phenomena is artificially induced. For the record, I don't doubt my own existence, but Rorty's therapy involves more than convincing us to ignore radical doubts. From my own experience, it seems that existential angst has come quite naturally to me, with or without the seductions of philosophers. Human history seems quite in line with my view as well, hence the consolations? of traditional religion.

An appeal to consequence refers to the irrational dismissal of a premise because its conclusions are inconsistent with your ideals, to phrase it differently. Is there anything ... By: 9erfandex. on 06 Nov 08, 23:03:49 Is there anything Kevin Spacey can't do? What a great rendition of a true classic from one of the best entertainers America has ever spawned! Do I hear an amen? The sentiment of this tune still rings as true today as it did 40 years ago when it was created, the real measure of a classic. R. I. P. Bobby Darin, keep on keepin' on Kevin Spacey and yes, Rock On Shindiggers! P.S.? thank you mhin and You Tube, Peace Out!

This is the ONLY song of Bobby Darin's that I actually preferred to the original. I love Spacey's ending. (Before I get reamed - I LOVE BOBBY DARIN!!)
Was this how it happened? Was there a choir behind Bobby, just as Spacey has in the film? (The choir adds quite a lot for me.)
Anyway, THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting - this is a truly uplifting song & your sound? quality is really good!!

Thanks, Spaceymania ... By: ARTCCWX. on 08 Jun 07, 17:17:58 Thanks, Spaceymania. I surely didn't mean to demean the great Bobby, but I was stunned to hear Spacey. Darin had a stage presence that was mezmering, and Spacey duplicated it. The close of that video was? brilliant scripting. Surely it's one of my favorite musicals. Darin simply didn't take his amoxicillen before denal work, with his heart condition, and sepsis (total blood infection) was his fate. So preventable !!
