Before you insert the pocket into your new backpack-buddy, fold one flap down, push it inside and sew that to the bottom of the cut. (The pocket might get in the way a little.) When that's sewn in, push the pocket all the way inside, pull the other flap up above the cut and sew it in place. Add stitches in the pocket corners to help? keep the stuffing inside. Good luck.

Thrift stores are full of stuffed animals, but I'm always a little nervous about bringing them in the house. ? However if you're taking the stuffing out anyway, you could easily throw it in the wash (or at the very least the dryer on high) to sanitize it.
