Prealgebra Lesson 30.1: Decimal Place Values
Posted by: tutoringecon
Video duration: 650 seconds
Global video hits: 588
www.greenemath.com In this video, we expand our place value chart to include "decimal places". We go through the process of learning these new decimal places by writing numbers onto our new expanded place value chart. We then write the place value for each digit in the number. This repetition will eventually allow a student to memorize the place value for each digit in the number.

Fair enough. I never liked changing it though. For example when he changes 9x - 10x to 9x + -10x, it would be easier for me just to move the 9x over to the? right side in my head so it's -10x + 9x = -x. It gets tedious changing all the signs after awhile. Anyways from pre-algebra onwards in math there are always negative numbers so you just get used to doing these in your head. :)

He does this step to show people an easier way to look at the problem.?

He is just showing you an easier way to look at this problem. Some people have trouble looking? at problems that have negatives in them.

Ahh the joys of? Pre-Algebra in 9th grade where I would do the same thing this teacher does changing the negatives to addition and my teacher would mark me wrong. lol

Hi, can you help me solve this word problem ? A gardener grows apples, pears and plums. Half of the orchard consists of apples, one third consists of pear and the rest of plums. Unfortunately, two thirds of the? plum stock is affected by plague, with tons of plum discarted as a result. What percentage of the entire orchard was plague victim?

I learned it in 7th grade yes, I'm in college now. What math are you taking? Pre-algebra or algebra? I'd definitely learn how to do this stuff (adding and subtracting with negatives). Also equations like he is doing in the video. I don't know what your class goes over though so it's hard to tell you what to be prepared for. If you can solve an? equation like 5(x-3)+17=3x+2 than you're good dude. That's pretty much the hardest you'll get at this level.

No. You only get exponents when you multiply variables with other like variables. For example x*x = x^2. Or x^2*x=x^3. When you add x+x you? get 2x. Or x-2x=-1x

I doubt you're still having problems with this after 4 months but you need to get x by itself on one side the of the equals sign and everything else on the other? side. X stands for a number and the equation is saying "what number multiplied by -6 and added to 10 equals -38. To get x to one side first subtract 10 from both sides to get -6x=-48. Then divide both sides by -6 to get x=8. You can check it. -6(8)+10=-38 ----> -38=-38 so it checks out.

I honestly don't know why he did that. You can do it but it's an unnecessary step . If you have a number minus a number (like 5-5) it's the same thing as writing (5+ -5). Another example: -5 - 5 could be re-written as -5 + -5. It's just to show you that you add -5 to -5 to get -10. If you have two negative numbers you add them. If you have two positive numbers you add them. If you? have one positive and one negative you subtract the negative from the positive.
