Thanks Tom. Your lessons are always worth watching. I pick up a thing or two every time. Couple of questions on one handed backhand: 1. If the ball is coming to my backhand with some pop on it, I find it hard to hit a backhand. Either I hit it out of the court or if I intend to hit it down the line then it goes wide out. Is it a timing issue? 2. How does one hit a? one handed backhand to a ball which rises on you? Like a Nadal forehand coming to a Federer backhand. Would a two hander work better?

Oups... later in the video, you do hit with a closed stance, sorry. I simply have seen too many? people get it wrong that each time I spot something like that, it annoys me really bad.

Awesome Tom, you're a legend.? I've never heard a better communication of your point in any coach and I play a lot of tennis. If you're ever in NZ, give me a call and I'll show you round

in no other video about backhand lift somebody was speaking about this small back swing movement, invented maybe by Lendl, he was havign this smal kick before hitting, and he was having one of the best backhands in the game up? from 1985.

I believe your thinking more of a one-handed slice (like a birds wings), however, with topspin I don't think it's necessary for the left hand and arm to come up parallel to the ground.? Absolutely, split step and shorten the backswing on a hard serve when trying to drive the ball. Best, Tom

When you hit the one handed backhand, I was taught to finish with my left arm up and parallel to the ground..Kind iflike a birds wings if that makes sense...Also, on a hard serve to my back hand, should I split step and not coil up as much? (i do not want to slice back every hard first serve)What do? you advise?

the term semi-western on the bh is a little confusing, you need to? start calling it the eastern bh grip.

Great video! You really do have an edge in articulating all the unseen facets of performing a one handed backhand. Your video has helped me a great deal. Thank? you very much, love your work!

@TennisAnnalyst your last comment was a bit cryptic but you are right. He? opens up early.
By: BestTenniscom. on 20 May 11, 01:04:14
@TennisAnnalyst The one-hander will never go away. Why? Because the one-handed backhand iis the prettiest shot in tennis, and the most pleasurable. If you hit your backhand with two hands you've never experienced that. Try something new, you might like it. By the way the? non-hitting hand is doing something.

My pleasure, you're? right... it's very satisfying when students have that enlightening moment and get something that takes them up a notch. All the best, Tom

Good point, most of today's forehands are open stance. However, Fed and others still hit the forehand with a closed stance at certain times, usually when attacking. I was referring to the closed stance forehand, which takes more effort (energy) to hit than a one-handed? backhand. All the best, Tom

Good points on the backhand, although on your first statement I might disagree that the? forehand is across the body. Most pro's actually swing out, then come across at and just after contact. Something you rarely hear pro's teaching, but I think it is significant. Watch Fed., Soderling, Gonzales on slow motion video. I'm on-board with your backhand coaching though. Thanks for the vid, well done.

I personally use it, as well? as recommend it, in order to take a big swing at the ball. I'll also use eastern and continental grips depending on what shot I need. All the best, Tom
By: redwonder. on 14 Feb 11, 03:42:48
Tom? are you really converting to the extreme backhand grip or are you just advocating it?
