If you want to find better music/movies you have to look for it. Independent films are great for this because those are the only ones that will still take chances. They don't care if they make their? money back.

This song was originally done by Deele in the 70s but I can't find? it on YouTube!
By: al2683. on 19 May 12, 03:45:32
Actually this video has the album music dubbed over video footage from a concert, so in? a way, you are both wrong.

Last things first, I know grunge wasn't exactly a big deal in context, but it was a handy example. As for the rest of it, I'm not surprised, but thanks for the info! The thing that bugs me most now is how many 'up and coming artists' on youtube are corporate signed and sponsored, and just use it as a marketing tactic. Pretty much shows? there's no possible avenue that good new artists could take into the mainstream that hasn't already been bought and sold. What a bummer.

That I? agree with.
By: OdinsCloud. on 12 May 12, 03:31:52
Yes, I agree it is... It really is not as fun and to be? honest it shows!

Our culture is made up nearly entirely of sub-cultures though. It's a different era. With the internet everyone in the world has access to everything all the time instantly. No need for radio, no need for the movie theater. We are a culture of people on their laptops in their bedrooms. The? only thing that radio is used for is 12 year olds on their way to school, and popular club music. Thats why thats the only thing you hear on the radio. Cant compare us to any other generation.
By: OdinsCloud. on 12 May 12, 02:56:42
Well that may very well be true and I have found some bands with virtually no radio play that I like. Not being played on the radio shows that they are not main stream and not indicative of the present culture or that the radio moguls choose not to placate your culture. In the 80's and back "digging" was not required. sub movements of a main culture were? always available by "digging"
By: FuzZDavid. on 12 May 12, 01:40:19
The older generation has no idea what "our" culture is about nowadays. I love 80s culture, even 60s 70s and 90s culture, but there is some amazing art and incredible music coming out currently and im sick of people trying to say its not there. If your only impression of modern movies and music is whats on the radio and? whats playing at the local cinema than YOUR LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE. spend more time digging on the internet and you'll understand what our culture is about.
By: CraigPlaysGuitar. on 11 May 12, 01:16:31
There has always been? good and bad art.
By: OdinsCloud. on 10 May 12, 06:19:37
Well aware of that. I know a rather successful DJ who says the parent companes of his stations were continually setting the agenda in terms of play.? He said they wanted to interject hip hop & other contrived styles into the play lists. Much of newer music does not become popular organically, rather it is contrived & delivered by the same people. They had dabbled in this before the 80's but it the 80's when it really started. Grunge was a very small insignificant movement.
By: Superstar12inch. on 10 May 12, 03:42:50
It's not a 'bottom up' thing, it's a top down problem. Example - in the 90's, when record companies started the decline they're in now, they latched onto what was an organic scene, the Seattle thing, and pushed every band on their label to do bad imitations of it. Compare the actual Seattle bands with the various shit-grunge that was played at the time. There's? not really anything that can be done, just keep supporting good local musos who don't have to toe the company line.
