Also, if a curb is necessary, make sure you use a metal lath that you form in the field the shape and size of the curb. I usually? cut an 11" wide by the length of the curb and place it over the pan. I place screws on the outside of the curb at the bottom. No penetrations on top or inside. Use a wall mud (a premix or sand, cement and lime) I use a cut piece of durock the size of the top of the curb. Usually 4.5" wide to form the curb. Make sure you pitch the top of the curb toward the inside.

My name is Michael with B&H Tile and Stone Group. I like to install Red Guard to the plywood first and let dry. Use the quick drying red guard. Mix a multipurpose thinset and apply the thinset to the red guard with a 1/4" notch trowel and? add your mud to the top of the thinset. Cover your thinset completely with the mortar bed material to avoid stepping in the setting mortar. This allows for the floor to be waterproofed and the mud to have an attachment to the floor.

the very first part of this was wrong. you dont just apply that morter on top of the paper? you need to put hardboard down first to support the morter dip shits

check with your local code. In some states code requires that you have a licensed plumber do your pan. In other areas a qualified tile installer can do it. Either way, just be sure whoever you get knows what they are doing. Licensed or? not.....

Ok I have a question Is the Tar paper necessary when using? DRY Tamp concrete, This mud didnt even get his hands wet !!!! Or is this a recomdeded application in case of overwatering the pre pitch concrete ?

Tilemen, charge those customers for full extend. They spend thousands for materials. And when they are talking to you, they pretend that they are poor and miserable and want to pay you couple hundreds for labor. Let them pay thousands to you or let them do labor by themselves. Do yall sick and tired to work for food and gas yet ? Don't be a victim of? this so-called "uncertain economy". Those who are paying thousands for a glass tile are pretty much "certain" about their income.

PRE-FLOAT is necessary, Pan material go's on top? of the pre-float
By: OnCloudNine62. on 27 Jan 11, 04:04:08
Can anyone help me with a question, please? My shower shares the same wall with an adjoining closet, the closet baseboard has been growing mold/mildew. I'm aware this is moisture seeping through from showering. Now, assuming this is a shower pan problem (what else can it be) what is the least expensive? way to replace it? My budget is $5000. Also, who's the best professional to do this? Do I call a plumber for the pan and a tiler or a tiler with complete shower remodeling experience?
By: gasparecastiglione. on 21 Jan 11, 19:07:29
Yes, a pre-slope is necessary over a slab? too.
By: gasparecastiglione. on 21 Jan 11, 19:06:03
Sorry, that is wrong. The silicone goes only on the underside of the membrane not on top? of it.
By: slchandl. on 19 Jan 11, 05:48:38
Is a? pre-pan really necessary on a concrete subfloor?
By: StarrTile. on 09 Jan 11, 07:58:39
@Tileandbeyond : I do the blocking for both resons you mention...and again, as I stated in my video, it taught ME to do it, no one ever told me & I never saw it done. To cutting the liner, this was a hole he cut ! Not needed OR recommended ! The cap has 4 holes for the 4? bolts..the liner has tiny X cuts made to set the bolts into & an X cut in the liner where drain hole is...not all the way to the edges though. Once the drain top is screwed into the threaded drain, it spreads out INTO the drain
By: tileandbeyond. on 09 Jan 11, 06:14:13
I agree about the blocking, but it's not to support the weight of the mortar, but the liner itself. And, how else are you going to attach the clamping drain if you don't cut a hole in the liner? C'mon, give the video maker credit for installing a preslope? at all. Most tile installers don't even know what that is.

Always, always, always, use a healthy bead of silicone to adhere the rubber membrane to the bottom flange prior to installing the hold down ring. Also, apply a bead beneath the hold down ring too. Make sure not to get any in the weep holes. a lot of people use the mosaic? or 2x2 marble sheet goods. make sure to SEAL THE HELL out of the tile.
By: woodallctile. on 26 Dec 10, 04:36:01
There has to be blocking in the? stud area.
By: dsshowerpan. on 21 Dec 10, 02:04:23
Dont see why people rip into you, as long as you stand behind your work its fine. I hot? mop personally, but to each his own.
By: jtkdspin. on 10 Dec 10, 00:04:07
You put tar paper down so when you make the pre slope the wood floor does not draw the moisture from the pre slope. Otherwise the pre slope will? dry to fast. Then your liner goes on top of the pre slope and clamped between part 1 and 2 of the shower drain, then your second cement bed goes down with the proper pitch. Then part 3 of the drain is adjusted with a peice of the tile you will be using for the floor.

This video is WAY off, first off the dude is trying to sell hoes & buckets to the customer ??? Then whats the point of the tar paper UNDER the thick rubber ??? To stop moisture ?? LOL !! I doubt moisture will EVER see the paper...but it looked good....Then there are NONE...NONE ...NONE of the supporting 2 x 6's between the studs to support the weight of the mortar, duh !....at this point I never finished watching the video, the eyes popped outa my head when he CUT THE HOLE? IN THE PAN !!!!! WTF ?
