Hand spinning wool in Bosnia. This is what my mother-in-law does. The real work. Real stuff. It simply works. Of course it takes some practice, but the practice is well worth. My son is wearing her woolen socks, my wife and me wear woolen stuff she made for es, sweaters, socks and even hand gloves.

I just bought a top-whorl drop-spindle off of ebay, and a local farmer gifted me a HUGE bag of wool!! It's a bit difficult, because the fibres are quite short, and I have to card it with hairbrushes and rove it myself, AND it's my first attempt, so it's quite "lumpy"... it's "artisan" wool, LOL! Next step? hand-dying using natural pigments!! I'm thinking...turmeric yellow? Berry red? :o)

Wanted to add that this video shows an early prototype model. Current ©Sling-Blades come with thicker 1/2" diam. oak handles & permanently attached wooden "cap". The Blade no longer has that odd-looking short end to it either. Just made it faster - easier & even more fun to spin painlessly for hours & hours! The faster you SLING the BLADE - the EASIER & less work it becomes - because the spin action feeds upon itself by simple Laws? of INERTIA. Enjoy!

The "Blade" doesn't capture the fiber. Going round & round each time puts ONE "twist" into the fibers. The faster you SLING the "Blade" in tiny circular motions - the FASTER you spin TWIST into the the fiber- making it hold onto itself by compressing & knitting the twisted fibers into yarn. MORE twist = TIGHTER spun yarn - LESS Twist = mean softer airier yarn.I STOP slinging the BLADE when I have ENOUGH twist in that yard or so of yarn. Wind? it on the Blade & Spin more fiber into yarn. SIMPLE !

Indeed - I did design my ©"Sling-Blade"-Handspinner after trying to come up with something that could be spun anywhere without being obtrusive, that was small & spun easily enough for Beginner Spinners to get the hang of Spinning. I also needed some way to carefully control almost ZERO tension on really fine lacy yarn? singles as they're being spun. Tah Dahhh - My ©Sling-Blade was born!!! Thank You for your comment! You should really TRY ONE! Kindest Regards - Teri

Thank you for your kind comments! It IS far easier & simpler for ANYONE? to use & at ANY spinning skill level - Particularly in tight or confined spaces! I'm spinning a blend of 60/40% Blue-faced Liecester & Tencel roving, that I hand-blend on a Louet carder. Thanks for asking! Teri

holy cow this video took forever to? load up but it was well worth it!! thanks for showing this method! my apartment is WAY too small for a traditional spinner and that looks far less cumbersome than a traditional hand or drop spinner.
