Jacqueline Kennedy of Sonoma County, California raises free range chickens, but even all the wild grub they can eat isn't enough to keep them happy all the time.Occasionally her hens go broody. The reason: they want chicks. "They have an inner life and you know I do still eat meat and chicken but it's good at least to know and I'm moving to being not as much of a carnivore."

This is a very common question... there are no more than one roosters per ten hens and these birds have plenty of room to range. If they were fenced, there would certainly be more incidents of conflict where the lesser rooster wouldn't be able to avoid another. Even bantam roosters live just fine with large standard birds. ? It also helps if they are reared in groups and I don't bring in adult birds, all are started as chicks.

On average a hen lays every 25 hours... only during daylight. Shorter? days of winter result in fewer eggs normally. Hens that are molting or brooding do not lay at all. There is lots of information about this on my main website Fred's Fine Fowl

Tell me do the hen lay egg everyday ?? or some days it do and some days not and? do they lay more eggs in winter or summer???

The number of chickens or other birds varies constantly as we sell them to neighbors and community members from time to time... for example, today we parted with 13 birds so others could have them as backyard pets... We are on 8.5 acres with adjacent farmland and woodland so it seems like much more. We average? 75 birds but we are in hatching season, so the number will again rise.
