yes you do whats in parentheses first but if there is a number outside them you multiply it by the number lets say.. 3(2X+4) that would be 6X=12 or 2(3+16) that would be 2(19) and? then 2 by 19 which is 38 Ithink

@whitemanwii you can't do the parenthesis first because you don't know what x is. you can't subtract x-7 let's because you have no clue what x is but if the problem was 3 (x-7) = 6 you would find that out exactly how he? says it... I know this because I'm in 8th grade math when I'm in 6th grade

This is useless unless your goal is to become an architect? or engineer. Architects and engineers tend to suffer by analysis by paralysis.

oh thanks man that was helpful, im in high school and allot of arguing? went on over this lol.
By: kabascoolr. on 25 Mar 12, 04:47:16
For example (2+1)+5^2-3*4/2. This? might look confusing, but use PEMDAS. Do the Parenthesis first: (2+1)=3. So now, we've: 3+5^2-3*4/2. You do the Exponent next: 5^2=25. Now we've: 3+25-3*4/2. You do either the multiplication or division now: 4/2=2. Then multiplication: 3*2=6. Now we have 3+23-6. Now do either plus or minus, like we did on the division or multiplication: 23-6=17. Then 17+3=20.
By: kabascoolr. on 25 Mar 12, 04:37:41
They're the exact same. Notice how? almost all of them end with DMAS? And only the first two letters are different? This is because, the first two are Parenthesis and Exponents. There are different words for them. Some say Brackets and Orders instead of Parenthesis and Exponents. But, I would say that PEMDAS is the easiest. Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division Addition and Subtraction. Do P first, then E. With MD it doesn't matter in which order, and with AS order doesn't mater.

thanks its a bit more clear now, its always been a big mystery for me. what ive noticed is that it has alot of different names so am never sure which one to use.? PEDMAS,BIDMAS,BODMAS,BOMDAS,DOBMAS..... which one do u suppose is the most suitable one to follow? or does it depend on the contents of the equation
By: kabascoolr. on 25 Mar 12, 03:00:25
That rule is sometimes called PEMDAS.. It's only applied when you have more than one sign in an equation. For example, if you have 2+4*2. Then, with the DOBMAS rule, you would do 4*2 first, because the M is DOBMAS stands for Multiplication, and it comes before the S, which stands for Subtraction. So at the end your equation will look like 2+8, which will give you 10. To make it easier,? whenever you have a Multiplication or Division, put it in parenthesis. I hope you understand :)

@superpowergirl2 you didn't even explain why it needs to be send on the other side, the video is still the best for introductory level, because not? all the audience knows how to substitute a variable. :D

Thanks for that? introduction

do you mean the sign flipping? if you still haven't figured it? out message me and i'll help
By: nightingale42. on 08 Mar 12, 09:26:31
this is how all teachers i encountered taught it. i agree with the original poster - this is cumbersome and confusing to people new to it. it might help from missing steps if you are trying to go too fast, but in my algebra classes most people failed to understand it until i explained in? the same way as superpowergirl2
