The majority of fat ( huge divots ) fairway wood shots are caused by too steep an angle of attack. This is usually caused by an effort to hit the ball hard plus " help " the ball into the air. After a bout of the tops recently, I realized I was rotating to too hard through the ball, and not giving my hands a chance to drop down onto the proper impact plane. The club was coming in high and topping/thinning it. Luckily once on the range I realized I need to slow the transition to give my arms a chance to move onto the right plane.
