I believe the origins of the "colour modulation" technique actually lie in? aeroplane modelling. I think it was something to do with painting different colours along panel lines to give them definition. If you want to "modulate" the colour black then you need to enter into the grey scale, using a very dark grey for your "black" base and black for shadow, lighter grey for highlight.
