Depends on what you want to shoot.. action, landscape, weddings, portraits, products, macro, or something else. Also depends on your budget. I would suggest looking at a used Canon Rebel, 20/40D,? or a Nikon D70/90 to start. Handle both, see which fits your hands better as the layout and controls are a bit different. Then plan out what lenses you will need to do the type of shooting you want to do. Lenses are more important than camera body. You may also try Sony, Olympus, Pentax..
