Of course, having the "wrong" religion can be pretty bad for your fitness. The analysis of whether religions are beneficial by Dawkins doesn't seem to be very useful (it's contradicted by the evidence associating religion with fertility). A lot of people? get annoyed when I say science is a meme. because they feel an an idea is either logical or memetic, (i.e, it can't be both), so it's good to know I have Dawkins personal backing on at least that. Whether something was classified as viral by him was down to whether it was deleterious to its hosts. This was not a new idea at the time - applying evolutionary theory to culture dates back to Darwin's era. Dawkins mostly contributed an articulate expression of? the idea, and some neat terminology. Whenever we represent (re-present) an? idea, we translate it into our own take on it and try to translate it into the right form of that which will have the right effect on our audience. I think this goes for most communication. There aren't a lot of cold facts out there which aren't couched in some kind of PR effort. The same way we see similar ideas to memes even in very ancient cultures, the same could be said in almost anything. Serious scientific study of Darwinian cultural evolution barely began until the 1970s. Apart from "The Selfish Gene" there? weren't really any serious books on the topic until the 1980s (see the "Memetics Timeline" for more detials). It is easy to claim that memetics is obvious - with hindsight - but you do then need to explain why it was that scientists after Darwin didn't cotton on to the idea for a hundred years.
