I am an engineer and whenever I need a freshing up of some math topics I really enjoy these videos, because they bring the memory back in a few minutes. However you? need too know a lot before you can understand this, so I suggest you go to school first and learn the basics before you post rude comments.
Actually, I think I ... By: pqxh. on 26 May 12, 00:01:26 Actually, I think I get it. It's confusing because there are infinitely many infinitely thin streams of particles. If that wasn't the case, in order to see how many particles are leaving per unit time you would add up all? the orthogonal velocities of each stream. This is just taking the limit as the number of streams approaches infinity, sort of.

Politics is just ... By: TheMathShaman. on 25 May 12, 21:54:15 Politics is just the shifting around of people and? their resources.
Nations, people, and their resources all go through processes which can be described most adequately by math & science.
Economics is mostly mathematics anyway. If you really want to manipulate finances, you'll have to learn complicated math anyway.
There's no escaping it, shrugging it off as something "normal humans" (whatever the hell that means) can't do is the main thing preventing you from learning it.
Break it down.

By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 25 May 12, 22:40:33 I think I should actually explain the political parties in Greece, just for you to know( the way the elections? are is; the first party gets +60 seats and all parties (including the first) share the rest 240 analogically, parties with less than 3% are out)
PASOK, the ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 25 May 12, 22:40:09 PASOK, the Socialists, the party that has ruled Greece for 21 years of its modern history
(that would be from 1974-2012) that went from 44% to 14% in the elections of May 2012. Favouring the austerity strategies (with some changes) they are supposed to be the No1 responsible for the mismanagement, but has a voters from fear ("We will go out of the euro" is repeated ) and traditional (usually aged) voters. Their leader is Evaggelos Venozelos, the ex-Minister of Finance? (tell me about ballsy)
ND, New Democracy, ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 25 May 12, 22:38:55 ND, New Democracy, the Conservatives, ruling Greece the remaining 17 years, went from 33% (their used-to-be lowest percentage in history) to 19%, but they won the elections basically they? are like PASOK, but they are one of the parties that will win the elections. They get voters the same way PASOK does, but they also try to scare people saying It's us or SYRIZA". Their leader is not that popular (Antonis Samaras) amongst anyone really, having betrayed the party in 1993 (tell me about ballsy)
SYRIZA, Coalition ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 25 May 12, 22:38:42 SYRIZA, Coalition of Radical left, went from 4,6% to 17% the main contestant of ND (New Democracy) semi-communist, semi-socialdemocratic, quite radical. Their leader is quite popular among? youngsters, and hated amongst aged people, Alexis Tsipras, says that hewill make Europe stop austerity, if he cant he will do a referendum about accepting the mesures, and now tries to form a plan B to avoid a Grexit, while all channels terrorise the Greeks sying " Europe says keep your obligations"(austerity)
Liberate Greeks, ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 25 May 12, 22:38:09 Liberate Greeks, The right-wing equivalant of SYRIZA, created two months ago and got 10%, the patriotic-conservatives, against austerity. Their leader, Panos Kammenos, is quite popular, an ex-member of ND, but one that he has been throwing blame about scandals on members of PASOK and ND alike, even when he was at ND, sued for defamations, owing almost 15 millions because of that, but most of the people he blamed are known to be corrupted. Voters are non SYRIZA against-austerity? people
CPG, Communists ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 25 May 12, 22:36:54 CPG, Communists against NATO, against European Union, never propose anything in the? parliament, waiting for the bolshevik revolution in Greece, went from 7% to 8%. Their leader, Aleka Papariga, is a traditional communist, who turned the party from a normal party (that was proposing stuff) to a bunch of in-parliament strikers. They are expected to go to fall in these elections, voters=traditional, hard-core communists
Golden Dawn, sami- ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 25 May 12, 22:36:44 Golden Dawn, sami-nazi, semi-nationalists, went from 0,3% to 7%, against Europe and austerity, aggresive against immigrants, kind of popular because of the propaganda gainst them, that? had the opposite effect, their leader, Nick Mihaloliakos is an ex-prisoner because he was for the military dictatorship between 1967-1974, quite polular amongst voters, belived to be stupis from most non-voters, Golden Dawn gets votes from mainly young people
Democratic Left, a ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 25 May 12, 22:36:35 Democratic Left, a party that got 7%, borned in 2011 from within SYRIZA, pretty much a socialdemocratic party, blurring the line between pro-austerity and? against-austerity, not radical at all, jst like its leader, Fotis Koubellis, getting voters from people that are not as "extreme" for SYRIZA or Liberate Greeks, but against PASOK and ND, expected to go with SYRIZA to form the so-called "Governing Left" although the Liberate Greeks will propably join too.

This shakes lenders to Eurozone countries, who fear that the debt owed to them might be inflated away when a Eurozone country decides to? up and leave. This in turn scares away foreign countries who buy Euros, causing the value of the Euro to decrease, relieving at risk Eurozone countries like Portugal and Spain.

I am greek and I ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 23 May 12, 18:27:12 I am greek and I want to inform about three factors;
First, The E.C.B. ( European Central Bank ) reassures the bank deposits so, unless ECT goes? boom, the greek deposits are safe.
Two, Greece doesn't only have a problem with the debt, it has a huge social sector that has a lot of emploees that literally do nothing, because politicians used to employ people to get? more votes, while there was no need for more social servants ( we call these servants "party armies" )
Three, Greece has ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 23 May 12, 18:26:01 Three, Greece has no production, literally. It imports food, oil, everything. That means that there is no way for greeks to eat, or create an economy ( that requires? energy ) without buying? it, and beacause of the inflation we ( I am greek remember ) wont be able to buy food, or energy to restart our economy, so we will literally starve until we can produce enough food to feed the people. On the other hand, the more we insist on austerity the GDP goes down, so inflation will be worse.
That's not true at ... By: 7h3647h32in6. on 23 May 12, 18:25:21 That's not true at all. If the economy grinds to a halt because of austerity, then you are far worse off than some inflation. Inflation is painful, but inflation doesn't stop a country. Imagine if all of Greece was suddenly jobless and? goods stopped being produced. You would then have both inflation AND an additional economic crisis.
That is an extreme, but any amount of austerity measures moves the economy towards that direction. It isn't the only option, but it is a bad option in comparison.

The bank run ... By: 7h3647h32in6. on 23 May 12, 18:21:36 The bank run problem is an issue before they introduce their own currency. If there is a bank run before the drachma is released, then many banks will end up closing? and the banking system could collapse.
People won't run on the bank after their euros become drachmas, because there isn't a reason to.

By: 7h3647h32in6. on 23 May 12, 18:19:30 Sal clearly explains that no matter what the debtors decide to pay back a debt in, unless it is in the currency the debt was originally agreed on, it is considered a default on the debt (that is, Greece not paying the debt back). What I don't understand is why austerity is being cast aside as if it weren't an option at all. The reason for my original comment wasn't to approve of what the Greeks have done. I wanted to point out that inflation hurts EVERYONE, both responsible, and irresponsible alike. Austerity wouldn't hurt the fiscally responsible people in Greece anywhere near as much as inflation would.

By: Malefucius. on 24 May 12, 09:58:20 correct me if I'm wrong, but in the hypothetical situation, I think Greece would be much better paying off their debts first before spending on entitlement obligations. as Sal said in the earlier part of the video, Greece owes a shit ton of cash in Euros. intentionally causing inflation in the economy like that will weaken the Drachma with respect to the Euro and thus more Drachmas are needed to exchange for Euro in order to pay back the debt which? doesn't solve shit.

Three, Greece has ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 23 May 12, 16:22:27 Three, Greece has no production, literally. It imports food, oil, everything. That means that there is no way for greeks to eat, or create an economy ( that requires energy ) without buying it, and beacause of the inflation we ( I am greek remember ) wont be able to buy food, or energy to restart our economy, so we will literally starve until we can produce enough food to feed the people.? On the other hand, the more we insist on austerity the GDP goes down, so inflation will be worse.
I am greek and I ... By: GeneralSalamandragon. on 23 May 12, 16:16:22 I am greek and I want to inform about three factors;
First, The E.C.B. ( European Central Bank ) reassures the bank deposits so, unless ECT goes boom, the greek deposits are safe.
Two, Greece doesn't only have a problem with the debt, it has a huge social sector that has a lot of emploees that literally do nothing,? because politicians used to employ people to get more votes, while there was no need for more social servants ( we call these servants "party armies" ).

the governments ... By: BrutusAlbion. on 23 May 12, 11:22:24 the governments dont actualy have that large of a government to market ratio, specialy if your talking about US. Regardless of that, its not the government size to the market which is hampering the economy but rather the shift from taxes of corporations to the lower and middle class the past 30 years. Reducing purchasing power and growth. All in the name of lower taxes competing against your neighbours who also implement lower taxes, and then the next one, and so? forth, competing till death...
That's why the ... By: stricklandfan. on 23 May 12, 08:22:47 That's why the Greeks have to do austerity right now? because if they don't the problem will be worse in the future when they default and any bondholder, government retiree, etc. (whomever the Greek government owes money to) gets pennies on the dollar. So, I think I agree with you that since there is no real free market capitalism in Greece or here in the U.S. any austerity measures really hurt the economy because the 2 governments have too big a 'market share' of their respective economies.
This video does a ... By: stricklandfan. on 23 May 12, 07:59:31 This video does a good job of explaining whats going wrong in the Greece but I don't buy the premise that it's political suicide to do some austerity measures if you show that default would result in a much worse situation for Greeks. Same for? the hypothetical example of Greece creating its own Fed and printing money doubling the money supply and using inflation as a political screen to hide behind because politicians in the US two party system are corrupt.

Could someone explain why the amount of debt that is owed remains the same if the currency becomes inflated? Why is it not =adjusted for the inflated amount, so that the debt remains the same value?
it is true when ... By: gandi761. on 21 May 12, 23:48:43 it is true when investor trust decline then they will expect higher interest revenue. but specifically what makes interest increase is the default risk premium (it is the risk that Greece will be unable to pay its debt). the formula to compute risk is r = free risk rate of interest + inflation premium + Liquidity Premium + Default Risk Premium + Maturity risk Premium. (when the risks increase then interest rate will? increase too).
No. Printing more ... By: nathanivijay. on 21 May 12, 18:22:01 No. Printing more money to get out of debt is a bad solution. It leads to destruction of currency.
If Greece had Drachma (not Euro) and it could not pay its debt, then the best solution would be default on debt i.e. pay say 10 cents on a dollar. So the banks who loaned to Greece would lose 90% of their loans because the? loan went bad. At least the citizens of Greece will not see a hyper-inflation. Their savings will continue to retain value.

By: AdeAttraktn. on 21 May 12, 15:33:05 If the investors had any inkling about this, instead of demanding higher returns, it's more likely that there would be an even bigger investor's frenzy to pull out of Greece. Also, Greece would not be as dependent on foreign investors anymore as it would be able to print its own money and finance itself.
? The only way for Greece to be able to do this? is if it breaks out of the EU which would make it an economic pariah for a very very long time.
In this ... By: AdeAttraktn. on 21 May 12, 15:25:12 In this hypothetical scenario, there is an underlying assumption that the? debt burden on Greece is not euro-denominated or dollar-denominated. So even if Greece were to break out of the Eurozone and start printing drachma, it won't be able to inflate away it's public debt as it's euro-denominated.

Yes, the stockpile ... By: mdecourcywheeler. on 15 May 12, 11:50:02 Yes, the stockpile will come back to the states as foreign purchase of US assets or as imports of american goods (and export out of america).
the use of foreign stockpiles of US dollars can be seen as the change in official reserve. once the foreign stockpiles of american dollars start to run thine. the rate of US exports and the foreign purchase of US assets will decrease until there is a positive figure in the change? of official reserves.
which must mean ... By: lolcat23. on 15 May 12, 10:17:51 which must mean that over time, the us banks, in this case the one who sold the 12.50, must have a pretty decent foreign currency stockpile. No, All of the US's ... By: mdecourcywheeler. on 15 May 12, 08:04:59 No, All of the US's imports are brought with foreign currency.
the step by step process is:
someone wants to by something online for (lets say) 1000JPY (Japanese Yen).
that costs approximately $12.50
the buyers bank will deduct $12.50 from the buyers account.
the bank will then use that $12.50? and buy 1000JPY.
the bank will then transfer that 1000JPY to the Sellers bank account.
the seller will then send his product to you.
so all import transactions are done with foreign currencies.

Small mistake. ... By: ActuarialAP. on 18 May 12, 19:53:24 Small mistake. Lebron specifically asked for the "odds" of making 10 free throws in a row. To calculate the odds, you must divide the probability of making 10 free throws in a row by the probability of NOT making 10 free throws in a row. Or simply, p/(1-p) - where p is the probability of making 10 free throws in a row. Thus, the answer would really be, (.06)/(1-.06)=.064 = 6.4%. Negligible, but? the correct answer.
Finding the "odds" is different than finding the "probability."

If the underlying principles of liquidity preference are wrong, then what benefit will you derive? from some advance mathematical model of it? Illustrating complex processes is the only function models serve in economics but you have to get the fundamental economic relationships correct first. Trust me, I have forgotten more economics than you will probably ever know. You aren't even familiar with basic terms.

Come back when you've read an economics textbook that was published this century.
In the meantime, you've had 3+ opportunities to watch this video, which is about modeling liquidity preference: the LM curve here is a generally tested--albeit? simplified--model designed to illustrate complex processes. Do you not realize that all these Keynesian models really only give a "scientific" sounding justification for the economic policies of mercantilism? How can you possibly say that these models are accurate when the only economists who have actually made accurate predictions are the ones who detest foolish attempts of modeling human action?
Expertly trolled, ... By: Studi037. on 14 Apr 12, 05:56:11 Expertly trolled, my friend. Well done.
On the off chance that you are even 1% serious, look:
1950's "solutions" to 1930's economics "problems" are ridiculous--the world has changed, and--thankfully--has our understanding of economics; Hazlitt rejects testability because he didn't like being proved wrong and he? pretty much rejected all mathematical modeling, which was just plain stupid, because, as Khan demonstrates, it's pretty darn accurate. Please try to learn something next time.

To get your OTP ... By: dreinertson. on 24 May 12, 17:47:15 To get your OTP through Customs, you might try? swallowing some microfilm. You need to make absolutely sure the OTP isn't read surreptitiously in transit.
If your job is to defeat someone else's OTP system, you can either search Bob's room, hack his computer, or ask him to show you the OTP.

Each and every message sent is encoded by a different OTP so even if you obtain a copy you wont be able to decipher the next message and no the two cryptographers don't have to meet this was probably true to some extent in the 40's but technology has grown over the past decades only a singe CD could hold hundreds of OTP and can just be encrypted and shipped disguised as a movie (even better to use a micro SD for that).
That is right. ... By: ROMAQHICKS. on 02 May 12, 17:39:12 That is right. This encryption is usually broken as a result of an encoder using the same page more then once.
@PhantomAct :? You second questions answer is that the two cryptographer has to be together at some point in order to obtain a copy of the same pad. This is the reason why the Allies spent a decent amount of resources trying to obtain Axis OTP during the wars. But if you had the pad you had to keep it a secret from your enemy or they would just get a new OTP.

However on another note this method (the OTP) lacks true randomness ie if you are using a machine to? generate numbers for the key it will do so according to a pre-programed algorithm only way to work past that would be to manually roll a dice and write the numbers down manually.

Algorithms can only generate pseudo-random numbers which where we have to hide it source, but in theory it can always be reverse engineered by a competent hacker.
To solve this problem we use specialized hardware that is actually chaotic in nature. It's basically a box containing a small quantity of radioactive material that measures it's decay and convert that to numbers.

My problem with ... By: cluther1114. on 01 May 12, 06:01:42 My problem with Keynesianism: He thoroughly explains that Y = (1/mps)(b). So, in other words, to increase Y, with a fixed mps, we need to increase b. He listed a number of ways to increase b, one of which was increasing govt spending. My problem is that this assumes govt spending is productive and efficient. Empirical data says otherwise. Basically, nobody spends somebody else's money as carefully as they spend their own. Rather than how? MUCH, we need to focus on how EFFICIENTLY we're spending.

By: ahsanxr. on 08 Apr 12, 15:51:58 Math doesn't appear in fields such as physics, economics,? engineering or even biology just because the people who included it want to feel smart. It would take you at least a few lines to give all the details whereas the mathematical equation involves about 10 characters with giving the information in full generality.

Actually, I think I get it. It's confusing because there are infinitely many infinitely thin streams of particles. If that wasn't the case, in order to see how many particles are leaving per unit time you would add up all? the orthogonal velocities of each stream. This is just taking the limit as the number of streams approaches infinity, sort of.

Politics is just the shifting around of people and? their resources.
