Yes, some people believe that barbless hooks in larger sizes can cause more damage to a carp's mouth.Thier logic being that a barbless hook would be? more inclined to move about during the fight, causing tearing. I would just use what you are most comfortable with. Have done it on 3 short sessions ( 2 - 4? hours) and have caught 12 perch and a few pike, all the perch over 1 lbs 6 ounces. I would have thought they could be found right up to Oxford. Barbel fishing on the Thames can be incredibly trying at times though. I've gone 20+ sessions without a fish in seasons gone by.
