This excerpt show how to mark your nocks, cut a guide line, then work them out with a round rat-tail file.
Final finishing and smoothing can be done by tightly rolling up some 80 grit sandpaper, then using that to smooth the inside of the nocks.

Vertical bamboo floorboards can be used to make decent performing beginner bows. It's a great material for learning with as it's cheap, usually easy to source, and easy to work with hand tools. If you're interested in trying your hand at bowmaking, give this stuff a go to learn the basics of shaping and tillering.

Get your glue up all ready like normal. Then set the tips of the blank on bricks and put a weight in the center to force the blank into a couple of inches of deflex. Tiller as normal.

Seems to me we may want to back the bamboo with a hickory, to get the best of? both worlds (Tension & Compression). my goal (55lb @ 29) -- I'm off to get a bundle of Bamboo and Hickory Floor board material. Looks like a small planner would be idea for sizing the stock material. Best regards

Most adult males ... By: Mububban23. on 14 Aug 10, 12:09:18 Most adult males are around 28 inches. For a nice safe conservative estimate, multiply your draw length by 2.5? to get the overall bow length required. 72 inches between the nocks is a good starting point. Nice and long helps spread the stress along the limbs. You can go shorter than 2.5, but shorter = more stress = more chance of bow breaking if it's not made really well.

@elgostine Loads ... By: Mububban23. on 13 Aug 10, 01:27:26 @elgostine Loads of people use bamboo flooring as a "beginner's" material for adult sized bows. The boards are only 12mm thick so you need to glue 2 layers together, then cut off the excess.
I've made 50lb flatbow & 45lb victorian longbow, both work fine & are a great? cheap way to learn the basics of bowmaking as I am doing currently.
What's your draw length? One single layer of flooring cut to 150cm length made a 20lb@20 inch bow for an 8yo kid but I had to shave it down to 15lb for him.
