I pour about 1/2 cup of kerosine in pot (usually, I place a piece of used paper towel also to act as a wick). I place pot in position and open oil inlet valve and wait until I see oil flowing into pot (it can take a while if it is very cold). Then I insert lit torch down through hole and light mixture and adjust fuel flow as desired. Hope this helps.

Hi, I am going to ... By: gersher1266. on 22 Aug 11, 12:39:30 Hi, I am going to have a go at making my own WOB.
I will be using different materials for the main body instead of brake drums that you guys have used. I am hopeing to incorporate a water heating jacket to exterior? and also an internal water heating chamber that will act as a secondary burning chamber. I will leave areas of the main body exposed to have heat for my workshop, I know it sounds funny to be taking the heat from the workshop and using it to heat water, but our winters are mild.
Even without the ... By: Kntryhart. on 06 Feb 11, 17:54:26 Even without the inner brake drum, it would take longer to heat simply due to the increased mass of the larger brake drums. The thought on the inner brake drum was to create another combustion chamber. Hot, unburned gasses would be caught in the inner brake drum and have another opportunity to be burned, instead of just going up? the chimney. The benefit of the added mass is that once up to temperature, I can let the fire go out and still have substantial heat for over an hour. Txs!
do you? think that ... By: gersher1266. on 06 Feb 11, 17:12:08 do you? think that the internal drum is making it take longer to heat up , If so I dont see the need for this new modification.

He has 12 years of experience with this type unit. Not taking advantage of his knowledge and experience would be a mistake. I do not have plans. I looked at other? units on YouTube, then built this. If you have specific questions, I would be happy to supply the info. My other waste oil heater video gives pretty good construction details.

Good day! Yes, the ... By: Kntryhart. on 17 Aug 11, 12:19:26 Good day! Yes, the screen in the PVC prevents corn/pellets from falling out when the vacuum is off. When the vacuum is on, the hole acts as a siphon and pulls corn/pellets toward vacuum (nothing falls out). I checked the shop vacuum for HP rating. Anything that might tell me the rating has long been worn off...it is at least 35 years old! Thanks? for your interest!

I guess that screen on the bottom doesn't let much fall out, does it allow any trash or small stuff to filter there and if so do you put another bucket or something there to catch that waste? Also, what HP shop vac are you using? thanks!

I keep tinkering with oil delivery/dispersion devices inside lower cast iron pot...on revision 6 (LOL). I have used it heavily this past winter (2012); works well. Keep in mind this is a crude system; I do not leave running if I leave for more than 10 minutes or so. Quality of used oil makes a huge difference. Bad used oil is a nightmare to? keep burning; good used oil - runs perfectly. Thanks!

@thierryanna I ... By: Kntryhart. on 04 Feb 11, 14:22:08 @thierryanna I agree that this is most likely not the best choice for what you want (unless you want a sauna in the outbuilding ;-). To Spike's point and the beauty of this design is does does not need any external pumps or fans to operate. While it is a very basic, somewhat crude design by? today's standards; properly managed, it can be a gem. Good luck and thanks for your comments!
@thierryanna ... By: Kntryhart. on 04 Feb 11, 13:58:36 @thierryanna Suggest you review Spike's website. He has excellent information. Under his Principles heading READ: The First Test Run, Inside. While humurous, it could have turned ugly real fast! I too had one situation where I got too much oil in the pot. Before I knew it, both drums were cherry red. I discovered that closing? off the primary air inlet holes brought the beast back under control. Scarey though for a few minutes!
@thierryanna There ... By: Kntryhart. on 04 Feb 11, 13:41:02 @thierryanna There are too many variables for one answer. Temperature? variations could be several hundred degrees. In my workshop, I can start out at +15 degrees and an hour later the feed pipe is >+500 degrees! Location and type of feed valve is critical (I have a good needle valve and control is not always as expected and I must modulate frequently). Assuming this in a shed (wood?), what would you do with excess heat? Dumping it would be a waste, but shed temperatures would soar if contained!
@thierryanna Hello! ... By: Kntryhart. on 04 Feb 11, 12:57:54 @thierryanna Hello! In my opinion, this design heater is not suitable for the application you? mention. If you watch ozzirt's videos (and his other links), he states that these type heaters are not automatic and should not be left unattended; I agree 100%. Oil flow rate must be monitored closely as viscosity changes due to temperature. Runaway situations can occur easily if too much oil is fed into pot. These are good for space heating under closely monitored conditions. Be safe!

I guess what I really like is seeing how we all achieve the same ends, often using vastly different materials. Your idea for the secondary burner is absolutely unique, nobody else has done it that way that I know of.
I'm not sure, but I feel that If you have flames in the chimney, you could probably turn down the fuel a smidgin, and still get the same amount of useful heat. I just feel that you are probably putting good heat straight up the stack.

The base simply sits on the ground with a few weights across the bottom tubes for "insurance". I am pleased on how stable the unit is.

The main boiler ... By: Kntryhart. on 01 Aug 09, 10:25:47 The main boiler controller has provisions to control the flue? fan. I added a manual switch override that keeps smoke out of the building when adding firewood ( a HUGE problem with the old boiler).
